Jordan’s Henny Surprises At 50-1 In Hurricane Bertie

Erv Woolsey and Ralph Kinder’s homebred Jordan’s Henny provided a 50-1 surprise when she closed down the stretch to defeat 8-5 favorite Curlin’s Approval by a half-length, winning the Grade 3 Hurricane Bertie this Saturday at Gulfstream. The 4-year-old daughter of Henny Hughes, ridden by Tyler Gaffalione for trainer Michael Tomlinson, covered seven furlongs over the fast main track in 1:23.68.

“She is quite a prize,” Tomlinson said. “She’s come off of a layoff, she’s had a hard campaign last year. We freshened her and the owners let us do what we needed to do. Everyone discounted her, but this filly has a lot of class and we’re just thrilled to death with the outcome of today. Tyler (Gaffalione) and I discussed the amount of speed in the race and he did such a wonderful job and we’re just tickled to death for everyone involved.”

Jordan’s Henny was near-last after the start of the Hurricane Bertie, waiting patiently behind the speedy frontrunners. Spice Lady was the first to the lead, then Apologynotaccepted took over briefly before folding in the turn. Also up close were Curlin’s Approval, Bodacious Babe and Moonlit Promise through fractions of :22.63 and :45.72.

Spice Lady re-gained her lead around the turn, but Curlin’s Approval ran her down near the eighth pole to have a clear lead. Meanwhile, Gaffalione was weaving in and out of traffic with Jordan’s Henny, and finally burst through a hole near the outside. In a matter of strides, Jordan’s Henny got in front of her rival to hit the wire a half-length ahead. Curlin’s Approval had to settle for second, while Rich Mommy beat out Moonlit Promise for third.

“The filly broke well today,” Gaffalione said. “She put herself in a real nice spot and was relaxed back there. When I picked her up at the three-eighths pole, she started giving me more down the lane, had a big stride and was all horse today.”

Bred in Kentucky, Jordan’s Henny is out of a winning daughter of Rubiano. The Hurricane Bertie was her first graded score and marked her third win in 15 starts. Jordan’s Henny has earned over $300,000.
