Japanese Stud Fee Announced For California Chrome

Two-time Horse of the Year California Chrome will stand for an advertised fee of 4 million yen (about $36,500) during his debut season at Arrow Stud in Japan, BloodHorse reports.

The 8-year-old son of Lucky Pulpit was initially slated to stand the 2020 breeding season at Taylor Made Stallions in Nicholasville, Ky., for $30,000. California Chrome’s sale to JS Company LTD. of Japan was announced in late November.

California Chrome’s first foals will be 2-year-olds of 2020.

California Chrome will join fellow Eclipse Award winner Shanghai Bobby on Arrow Stud’s 2020 roster. The 9-year-old Harlan’s Holiday stallion will stand for 2 million yen (about $18,250).

Shanghai Bobby, the champion 2-year-old male of 2012, entered stud in Kentucky in 2014, and he was purchased by Japanese interests following the 2018 breeding season. His most notable runner of 2019 is Shancelot, who won the Grade 2 Amsterdam Stakes and finished second in this year’s Breeders’ Cup Sprint.
