It’s A Girl! Stage Magic, Dam Of Justify, Delivers Curlin Filly

Stage Magic, the dam of 2018 Triple Crown winner and Horse of the Year Justify, delivered a filly by Curlin shortly after midnight on April 7, per the Twitter account of Tanya Gunther of breeder Glennwood Farm.

The filly is the seventh foal out of Stage Magic, a 13-year-old Grade 3-placed daughter of Ghostzapper who was named Broodmare of the Year in 2018 on the strength of Justify’s championship campaign.

Justify, a son of Scat Daddy, is Stage Magic’s best-known foal, but she is also the dam of The Lieutenant, a Grade 3-winning son of Street Sense. Holiday Music, by Harlan’s Holiday, is a two-time winner.

Stage Magic resides at Glennwood Farm in Versailles, Ky. She is a homebred for the operation, which purchased her dam, the Grade 1-placed Pulpit mare Magical Illusion, for $425,000 at the 2005 Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale.

Curlin, a 16-year-old son of Smart Strike, is a two-time Horse of the Year known for his victories in the Preakness Stakes, Breeders’ Cup Classic, Dubai World Cup, and two editions of the Jockey Club Gold Cup.

His most notable runners include champions Vino RossoExaggerator, Good Magic, and Stellar Wind, along with Belmont Stakes winner Palace Malice and classic-placed runners Keen Ice, Irish War Cry, and Tenfold.

Curlin stands at Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms in Lexington, Ky., for an advertised fee of $175,000.
