It’s A Boy! Two-Time Horse Of The Year California Chrome Officially A Father

California Chrome has officially become a father, reports Taylor Made Farm’s Twitter account. The two-time Horse of the Year’s first foal is a colt out of the multiple stakes-winning Ohio-bred millionaire Pay the Man (Bernstein), born Saturday night at Calumet Farm.

Fan-favorite California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit – Love the Chase, by Not For Love) was voted Horse of the Year in 2014 and in 2016. He won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes as a 3-year-old, then finished fourth in the Belmont Stakes. Twice the flashy chestnut shipped overseas to Dubai for what was then the world’s richest horse race, finishing second in 2015 and winning the $10 million Dubai World Cup in 2016. In 2016, his only defeat came in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, in which he was beaten a half-length by Arrogate. Overall, California Chrome earned $14.7 million, winning 16 times from 27 starts.

Pay the Man is a 14-year-old daughter of Bernstein, out of the winning Magesterial mare Pyrite Captain. Over a 76-race career, Pay the Man won 27 times, was second 11 times and was third nine times to earn just over $1 million. Twenty-one of her wins came in listed stakes company.
