Injury Sidelines Overseas Breeders’ Cup Turf Contender Poet’s Word

An overseas trip to the Breeders’ Cup is no longer in the plans for two-time Group 1 winner Poet’s Word, who sustained an injury that will keep from racing the remainder of the year.

The colt trained by Sir Michael Stoute won the G1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot in June, then the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot in late July. Both victories qualified him for a spot in the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Churchill Downs in early November. Poet’s World most recently finished second to Roaring Lion in the Juddmonte International at York.

“Poet’s Word has sustained an injury and will not be able to race again this year,” Stoute said in a statement. “His owner, Saeed Suhail, will soon be coming to England and will make a decision on his future.”
