Indiana Breed Development Programs To Host Seminar On Foaling Emergencies

On February 16, breeders and owners participating in the Indiana Thoroughbred, Quarter Horse and
Standardbred Breed Development Programs are invited to attend a free seminar on what to expect and
how to manage equine reproduction and foaling emergencies. The seminar will take place at Centaur
Equine Specialty Hospital in Shelbyville, Ind., with Senior Veterinary Surgeon Dr. Timm Gudehus and
staff veterinarian Dr. Alec Davern presenting.

Topics covered in the seminar include:
– Chronic infertility due to reproductive tract injuries
– Dystocia/Birthing complications (management, risks, costs, etc.)
– Postpartum management and re-breeding
– Foal diseases and conditions requiring surgical care (limb deformities, cleft palate, etc.)

The seminar will take place from 2 pm EST to 4:30 pm EST, and attendees are invited to take free tours
of the new state-of-the-art facility and ask questions after the seminar. There will be refreshments and
some educational literature available.

“While our racing program is gaining strength, we know we need to assist our breeding programs in
keeping mares and foals healthy and strong to have resilience to make it to the track,” says Jessica
Barnes, Director of Racing and Breed Development for the Indiana Horse Racing Commission. “The
Commission wants our breeders and owners to succeed in every aspect of the business, and we’re
happy to partner with the Centaur Equine Specialty Hospital to bring more awareness of how horsemen
and women can better their programs.”

Attendance is open to all horse owners, no matter the breed, that are looking to increase their
knowledge of equine health. RSVPs are required by February 12 by emailing thoroughbred@hrc.in.gov.
More information can be found on any one of the breed development programs’ Facebook pages, the
IHRC website or by calling the Indianapolis office.
