In Arrogate’s First Work Since Pacific Classic, Baffert Seeks ‘Input’ From Rider Bejarano

Still the highest-rated racehorse of 2017 by Longines, Juddmonte Farm’s Arrogate worked on Monday for the first time since the Aug. 19 Pacific Classic, reports The 4-year-old son of Unbridled Song breezed a half mile by himself over the Santa Anita strip in :48 3/5, ridden by Rafael Bejarano.

Jockey Martin Garcia is Arrogate’s usual work rider, but trainer Bob Baffert gave the leg up to Bejarano to get a different read on how the colt was feeling.

“(For his) first work back, I just wanted to make sure that somebody who knows the horse really well (was aboard). I needed his input,” Baffert said. “He said (Arrogate) felt strong, he just said he went perfect, like the Arrogate that he knows. So I was happy with that.”

From the 2016 Travers through the 2017 Dubai World Cup, Arrogate put together a string of stirring Grade 1 victories which made him the early favorite to repeat in this fall’s Breeders’ Cup Classic. In his first start back after the trip to Dubai, however, Arrogate was beaten 15 1/4 lengths to finish fourth, and in the Pacific Classic a month later, he was again defeated, finishing second to stablemate Collected.

Both of those losses were suffered over the Del Mar surface, on which the Breeders’ Cup will be held the first weekend of November. Baffert had previously indicated that he planned to train Arrogate up to the Classic, and the Hall of Fame conditioner seems to be sticking to his guns.

“It’s week to week,” he said. “It’s work to work right now. If he’s doing really, really well, we run.”
