I’m So Fancy Leads All The Way In Winstar Matchmaker

The second choice at 9-5, Lael Stables’ I’m So Fancy took advantage of the small three-horse field in Saturday’s G3 Matchmaker Stakes at Monmouth. The 5-year-old daughter of Rajj went to the front and maintained a steady pace through the early stakes, saving just enough to fend off 1-5 favorite Competitionofideas by a head on the wire. Ridden by Trevor McCarthy for trainer Arnaud Delacour, I’m So Fancy completed 1 1/8 miles over the firm turf course in 1:51.11.

I’m So Fancy was able to get away with early fractions of :27.23 and :52.19, while Competitionofideas was about a length behind on the outside in second. That configuration hemmed a slightly rank Touriga in at the rail all the way around the course.

When Competitionofideas made her bid in the far turn, McCarthy was just a second faster to ask for run from I’m So Fancy. The difference resulted in a three-length burst away from her two rivals, with I’m So Fancy well in front on the turn for home.

Competitionofideas dug in hard in the final sixteenth and was able to cut that margin to a head, but McCarthy had timed his ride perfectly to hit the wire first by a head on I’m So Fancy. Competitionofideas was second, while Touriga finished a close third.

Bred in Ireland by Lisheen Stud, I’m So Fancy was a $667,958 purchase at the 2018 Tattersalls December mare sale. She owned multiple stakes wins overseas as well as a Group 3 win and Group 2 placing. Since moving to the U.S., I’m So Fancy has now earned a listed stakes win and graded win, improving her overall record to 6-3-3 from 23 starts with earnings of over $350,000.
