‘I Should Be Able To Train Again’: Indicted Trainer Tannuzzo Claims ‘Guilt By Association’

A day after being arrested along with 26 others in a racehorse doping scandal, trainer Michael Tannuzzo told the Daily Racing Form his indictment was “guilt by association” because Jorge Navarro, one of the main targets of the investigation, was his best friend. Tannuzzo was named in the indictment for having delivered a package for Navarro.

“I didn’t give the horses anything,” Tannuzzo told DRF Tuesday at Belmont Park, where he was overseeing the dispersal of his stable. “I saw the photos of the drugs [in the indictment]. I’ve never seen that stuff in my life. It’s guilt by association. [Navarro] was my best friend. We talked about horses a million times on the phone. He never said ‘I got this secret magic potion I could give you.’

“I would think I should be able to train again,” Tannuzzo continued. “I was here training on and off for five or six years and never had an issue.”

Tannuzzo told DRF he’s prohibited from talking to Navarro while the case is ongoing and his license has been suspended by the New York Gaming Commission. The 11 horses in Tannuzzo’s barn have been transferred to other trainers.
