Hyperfocus Gets Constitution’s Second Crop Off To Fast Start

Repole Stable’s Hyperfocus debuted victoriously Saturday at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., providing red hot sire Constitution with his first winner from his second foal crop.

Trained by Todd Pletcher, Hyperfocus rated behind a hotly contested pace set by Breakthrough and pressed by Peppi in the 4 ½-dash for 2-year-olds. After racing somewhat greenly in the stretch, Hyperfocus straightened out and kicked in to pass the tiring pacesetters to score by 1 ¼ lengths under Irad Ortiz Jr.

The son of 2014 Florida Derby (G1) winner Constitution ran 4 ½ furlongs in 52.63 seconds as the 5-2 second choice. He was purchased for $100,000 at the 2019 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

Peppi held on for second, 4 ¾ lengths ahead of 2-1 favorite Breakthrough, who was the first offspring of 2016 Florida Derby and Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Nyquist.

By leading sire Tapit, Constitution finished second behind Triple Crown winner American Pharoah on the list of leading first-crop sires of 2019, according to Bloodhorse.com, and he leads the second-crop list in 2020, thanks in large part to his leading son, Florida Derby winner Tiz the Law.

Constitution stands for $40,000 live foal at WinStar Farm in Versailles, Ky.
