Hotshot Anna Continues Her Mastery Of Presque Isle Downs, Repeats In Masters

Running her record over the Presque Isle Downs Tapeta surface to a perfect 4-for-4, Hotshot Anna overtook Talk Veuve to Me in the stretch to win the Grade 2, $400,000 Masters Stakes for the second year in a row under Antonio Gallardo.

Owned and trained by Hugh Robertson, Hotshot Anna – a 5-year-old mare by Trappe Shot out of Avalos, by Holy Bull – covered 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:15.32 and paid $4.20 as the 11-10 favorite at the Erie, Pa., racetrack and casino. Talk Veuve to Me, who surged to the lead at the top of the stretch under Jose Ortiz before being overtaken by the winner, held second by three-quarters of a length over Misericordia, with Regal Chant finishing fourth in the field of eight fillies and mares, three and up. Darcy Mae, Jean Elizabeth and Mominou were scratched.

Hotshot Anna settled just off the early pace to the outside as Regal Chant led the field for the opening quarter mile in :22.88. Talk Veuve to Me, racing just off the lead, took command after the first quarter and maintained a half-length advantage over Hotshot Anna through a half in :45.60. The winner ranged up to her outside at the top of the stretch, drew on even terms in mid stretch (the six furlongs in 1:09.03) and gradually pulled away to her winning margin.

The victory was the 10th in 22 career starts for Hotshot Anna and the $240,000 winner’s share boosted her career earnings to $863,440. Based at Arlington Park, Hotshot Anna made her first two starts of the year at the suburban Chicago track, then prepped for the Masters by winning the Aug. 19 Satan N Lace Stakes at Presque Isle Downs, a race she also won en route to her 2018 Masters victory.

Hotshot Anna was bred in Kentucky by Paul Tackett, who sold her to Robertson for $20,000 at the 2015 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.
