Hollendorfer, Now Down To 38 Horses, Files More Documents In Fight To Get Back To Work In California

Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer continues his legal battle to get back to work in Southern California. According to a report by Thoroughbred Daily News Monday, Hollendorfer’s legal team has filed an amended complaint against Los Angeles Turf Club (Santa Anita Park), which excluded Hollendorfer last year, and a writ against the California Horse Racing Board (CHRB).

The Stronach Group banned Hollendorfer from its properties, including Santa Anita and Golden Gate Fields, last year after four of his trainees died during a nationally-publicized spike in racing and training fatalities from late 2018 through early 2019.

Hollendorfer’s amended complaint against the Los Angeles Turf Club at Santa Anita is focused on seeking damages for his exclusion from the track. His attorney told TDN that attempts at settling the matter out of court, including arbitration, have been “ignored.”

The writ against CHRB, filed in the Superior Court for the County of San Diego, stems from his existing case against the racetrack. That writ is stalled while many of the court’s regular activities are paused due to COVID-19.

So far, Hollendorfer has been successful in seeking a temporary restraining order against Del Mar Turf Club, which resulted in Del Mar allowing him to train and compete last summer. He has also been permitted full access at Los Alamitos. There is no current action against his license from the CHRB.

Hollendorfer’s legal team argues that the track’s action in throwing him out goes against the procedures outlined in the race meet agreements and stall agreements the horsemen enter into with The Stronach Group. The track has argued it has the right to exclude Hollendorfer because it is private property.
