Hillenbrand, Duarte Slowly Recovering From COVID-19

After an outpouring of good wishes from her readers and fans, Seabiscuit author Laura Hillenbrand updated followers on her recovery from COVID-19 earlier this week.

Hillenbrand writes that she is on her 27th day of the illness and is still struggling to breathe normally, although she says she has improved since the earlier days of her illness, when she suffered low blood oxygen and had to go to the emergency room.

She writes that her COVID-19 test came back as “not detected” at the hospital but she was told in no uncertain terms that she had the virus and had likely gotten a false negative, which has been known to happen.

Hillenbrand thanked the many readers who have reached out with messages of support.

Trainer Jorge Duarte, who was diagnosed with COVID-19 in mid-March, has also continued his recovery at home but similarly told Horse Racing Nation he still struggles with shortness of breath and a lingering cough. Duarte had pneumonia and was hospitalized for six days, during which time he was on oxygen.

Duarte, who trains for Colts Neck Stables, has targeted May 1 for his return to his barn but said Colts Neck racing manager Alan Goldberg has emphasized he should “heal up right” before coming back to work.
