Heading West: Trainer Jacobson To Have California String

New York-based trainer David Jacobson plans to have a string of horses based at Santa Anita for the upcoming winter-spring meet, according to a recent interview he had with the Daily Racing Form.

Jacobson said that he will send 20 horses – mainly turf runners – to California. Eventually, he would like to have a stable based there year-round.

Jacobson told the Form that one of the reasons he wants to have runners in California is because he recently became a grandfather, and his son Howard, whose wife gave birth to twins, lives there. Jacobson added that his son would also work in the stable, and that he also hired Humberto Ascanio to be his assistant trainer. Ascanio was Bobby Frankel’s top assistant for many years.

“He’s going to be working with me and Howard out there, and I’m very excited about it,” Jacobson said.

Jacobson will continue to have around 40 horses based in New York.
