‘He Took Us On A Great Journey’: Record-Setting ‘Little Rocket’ Imperial Hint Retired

Multiple Grade 1-winning millionaire Imperial Hint has officially been retired, according to the Blood-Horse. The 7-year-old son of Imperialism is being considered for a career as a stallion, possibly in South Korea, but no deal has yet been finalized with owner Raymond Mamone.

Trained by Luis Carvajal, Jr., Imperial Hint won his first graded stakes races in 2017 before finishing an impressive second in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Del Mar. The horse had massive seasons in 2018 and 2019, in which he won the both G1 Vanderbilt and G1 Vosburgh in back-to-back years. His Vanderbilt win in 2019 saw the 15.2-hand “Little Rocket” set a track record at Saratoga, blazing six furlongs in 1:07.92.

This year, Imperial Hint began his season in Saudi Arabia but ran last of 12 in the inaugural Saudia Sprint. He stayed overseas to head to Dubai for another try at the Group 1 Golden Shaheen, a race in which he finished third in 2019, but the coronavirus pandemic forced the cancellation of all Dubai World Cup night races. When Imperial Hint returned stateside, Carvajal said he was starting to show some wear and tear, and the decision was made to retire the earner of $2.2 million.

“He can probably race but I don’t think he would be at the same level. I think this horse did great for us and he took us on a great journey,” Carvajal told the Blood-Horse, saddened at the news that his top horse would be leaving his small operation. “It’s hard to find the one. I have friends who are older than me who have been training for 40 years and they’re still looking for that one special horse. To have a grade 1 winner like Imperial Hint who broke the track record at Saratoga, I hope his name stays up there for years to come.”

Now that I read this I feel like crying,it really hurts let the little rocket leave my barn. Thank you little rocket I will always love you. https://t.co/1fHT9d1YsH
