Hartlage, Johnson Extend Win Streaks In Final Strides Of Oaklawn Meet

Trainer Gary “Red Dog” Hartlage and his longtime go-to rider, Joe Johnson, teamed for their first victory at the meet Friday, the 45th day of the 55-day season.

Dirty Day ($59) got up in the final strides to break his maiden in the third race and extend the winning streaks in Hot Springs for Hartlage, Oaklawn’s co-leading trainer in 1997, and Johnson, Oaklawn’s leading apprentice in 1990.

Hartlage has at least one victory every year at Oaklawn since 1982, his second season in Hot Springs. Johnson has at least one meet victory every year since he began riding at Oaklawn in 1990.

Their most famous local collaboration, millionaire On Fire Baby, won the $500,000 Apple Blossom Handicap (G1) for older fillies and mares in 2013.
