Hall Of Famer Zenyatta Foals Filly By Candy Ride

Zenyatta, the three-time champion, 2010 Horse of the Year and 2016 Hall of Fame inductee, foaled a chestnut filly by Candy Ride Sunday morning at 5:40 a.m. ET at Lane’s End in Versailles, Ky.

Zenyatta has had two foals to race and one preparing for her first start: Cozmic One (2012), Ziconic (2013), and an unraced 2017 filly by Medaglia d’Oro named Zellda.

Cozmic One, a Bernardini colt, failed to hit the board in five starts for John Shirreffs, who conditioned Zenyatta through 19 consecutive wins over four racing seasons, meeting defeat for the first time in her final start, the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Classic in 2010. Ziconic, a Tapit colt also trained by Shirreffs, was winless in 12 starts, with two seconds and six thirds. Zellda is unraced but currently in training for Shirreffs at Santa Anita.

Two War Front foals died, one a 2014 filly who had a paddock accident as a weanling and a 2016 colt who only lived a few days, succumbing to meconium aspiration syndrome. Zenyatta aborted a foal by Into Mischief in 2018 and was not bred that year.

“We think she’s just beautiful, and Zenyatta is a very proud mom!” a statement on the Zenyatta Facebook page said of the Candy Ride filly.

Zenyatta, by Street Cry out of Vertigineux, by Kris S., was bred in Kentucky by Maverick Production, Limited. She raced for Mr. and Mrs. Jerome S. Moss.
