Hall Of Famer Azeri Delivers Drefong Filly In Japan

Azeri, a Hall of Famer and 2002 Horse of the Year, delivered a filly from the second crop of champion sprinter Drefong at Northern Farm in Japan.

The 22-year-old Jade Hunter mare has resided in Japan since selling to Northern Farm CEO Katsumi Yoshida for $2.25 million at the 2009 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale. She had three foals reach the races prior to her export, with the best being the Grade 2-winning Ghostzapper mare Wine Princess, who herself went on to bring $3 million at auction as a broodmare.

Since moving to Japan, Azeri has been a frequent visitor to the recently deceased Deep Impact, who was a perennial leading sire in the country. The best from that pairing to date has been Group 2-placed runners Leukerbad and Shirvanshah. She has also produced foals in Japan by Heart’s Cry and Zenno Rob Roy.

Azeri was a four-time Eclipse Award winner, taking champion older female honors each year from 2002 to 2004, and winning the Horse of the Year title in 2002. She won eight of nine starts during her Horse of the Year campaign, capped off by a triumphant five-length score in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Arlington Park. She retired with 14 graded stakes victories, including 11 in Grade 1 company.

Azeri was voted into the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame in 2010.

Drefong, a 7-year-old son of Gio Ponti, stands at Shadai Stallion Station in Japan, where he entered stud in 2018.

He earned the Eclipse Award for champion sprinter in 2016, with a 3-year-old campaign that included wins in the Grade 1 King’s Bishop Stakes and the Breeders’ Cup Sprint. He came back the following season to win the Grade 1 Forego Stakes.
