Half-Sister To Two-Time Champion Roy H Romps In Gulfstream Park Debut

Calumet Farm’s Vinca, a 3-year-old half-sister to two-time champion Roy H, made an auspicious debut at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., on Wednesday, romping to a six-length victory in Race 6.

Out of the Elusive Quality mare Elusive Diva, the daughter of Oxbow broke alertly under Tyler Gaffalione to quickly open a clear lead along the backstretch and was never challenged at any point in the five-furlong maiden special weight race that was moved from the turf course to a fast main track.

“We’ve had her since last spring. We’ve been anxious to run her but it’s been one thing after another. She’s been training great down here. I’m glad we finally got her to the races,” trainer Michael Maker “She’s shown us a lot of speed in the morning.”

Vinca ($11) ran five furlongs in 59.21 seconds on fractions of 22.67 and 46.43.

Maker said he had no immediate plans for Vinca.

“Right now, we’re just thankful we got through this one,” he said.

Roy H won consecutive Eclipse Awards for outstanding sprinter the past two years after winning back-to-back editions of the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1)..

Who’s Hot: Coming off four-win days on Saturday and Sunday, Jose Ortiz won three more races Wednesday at Gulfstream Park. The 25-year-old younger brother of leading rider Irad Ortiz Jr. scored aboard Durlyn ($14.60) in Race 1, Radiant Rhythm ($3.80) in Race 3 and Just Wistle ($10.20) in Race 7.
