Gunnevera Headlines Nominees To G3 Harlan’s Holiday Stakes

Margoth’s Triple Crown race veteran Gunnevera, most recently a dead-heat fifth in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1), is one of seven graded stakes winners among 18 horses nominated to the $100,000 Harlan’s Holiday (G3) Dec. 16 at Gulfstream Park.

The 1 1/16-mile Harlan’s Holiday for 3-year-olds and up is joined by the $100,000 Rampart (G3) and $100,000 Sugar Swirl (G3) on dirt and the $100,000 My Charmer (G3) and $100,000 Tropical Turf on grass as the first of 38 graded stakes during the 2017-18 Championship Meet.

Antonio Sano-trained Gunnevera is slated to make his final start as a 3-year-old in the Harlan’s Holiday, as a prep for the $16 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) Jan. 28, the world’s richest horse race, Jan. 28 at Gulfstream. The son of Dialed In won the Fountain of Youth (G2) and Tangelo Stakes and was third in the Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream and ran seventh in the Kentucky Derby (G1), fifth in the Preakness (G1) and second in the Travers (G1) during his sophomore season. Graded-stakes winners Destin, Fear the Cowboy, Flatlined, Mr. Jordan, Page McKenney and Tommy Macho are also nominated.

Curlin’s Approval, a multiple Grade 2 winner at Gulfstream for co-owners Bridlewood Farm and trainer Happy Alter, is nominated to both the one-mile Rampart and six-furlong Sugar Swirl, both for fillies and mares 3 and up. The 4-year-old daughter of Hall of Famer Curlin owns seven career wins, all at Gulfstream, finishing second as the favorite in last year’s Rampart. She lost all chance when she stumbled at the start of her most recent race, the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) Nov. 4.

Also nominated to the Rampart are Lewis Bay, a multiple graded-stakes winner unraced in 13 months since finishing second by a neck in the 2016 Comely (G3) last November at Aqueduct; and graded stakes winners Gamble’s Ghost and Nonna Mela.

Gelfenstein Farm’s Dearest, is nominated to defend her win in the 2016 Sugar Swirl for trainer Gilberto Zerpa. Among her fellow nominees are Gulfstream stakes winners Bodacious Babe, Mama Joyce, Miss Hollywood and Pretty Perfection.

Moyglare Stud Farm’s Celestine, whose multiple graded stakes wins include the 2016 Just a Game (G1) and 2016 and 2017 Honey Fox (G2) at Gulfstream, leads 17 nominees to the one-mile My Charmer for fillies and mares 3 and up. The 5-year-old Scat Daddy mare has raced only twice since the Championship Meet, finishing fifth in the Just a Game and third in the Noble Damsel (G3), the latter Sept. 23.

Grade 2 winner On Leave, whose two victories this year have both come in stakes, most recently in the All Along Sept. 16 at Laurel Park, and multiple stakes winners Gianna’s Dream, scratched as one of the favorites from the Claiming Crown Tiara Dec. 2 at Gulfstream, and King’s Ghost are also nominated.

The Tropical Turf, also at a mile on grass for 3-year-olds and up, was the most popular stakes with 24 nominations led by graded stakes winners All Included, Blacktype, Camelot Kitten, Dimension, Flatlined, Glenville Gardens, Shining Copper and Tower of Texas along with Economic Model, winner of the Easy Goer Stakes and second in the King’s Bishop (G1) in 2016 that has made all 13 of his previous starts on dirt.
