Gun Runner ‘Happy’ & ‘Loose’ Ahead Of Pegasus World Cup

Winchell Thoroughbreds and Three Chimneys Farm’s Gun Runner bounced out of his second workout Sunday in fine fashion since winning the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1).

Almost certain to be voted Horse of the Year at the Eclipse Awards ceremony Jan. 25 at Gulfstream Park, Gun Runner worked five-eighths of a mile in 1:02 2/5 on what is expected to be his regular work day up until Gulfstream’s $16 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1). It was 24th fastest out of 80 works at the distance Sunday morning at the Fair Grounds in New Orleans.

Scott Blasi, trainer Steve Asmussen’s chief assistant who has been with Gun Runner on a daily basis for more than 2 1/2 years, said the soon-to-be 5-year-old had the standard walk day Monday, galloped with “enthusiasm” Tuesday and Wednesday and is doing “great.”

While Gun Runner hasn’t been asked to do much in his first two works, Asmussen said Sunday afternoon: “He is a very physical horse. I love how loose he is, how happy he is,” adding of recent rain in New Orleans, “Timing continues to work out for us.”

Regular exercise rider Angel Garcia has been on Gun Runner for his recent works. Asmussen said jockey Florent Geroux will be up for several of Gun Runner’s works, but not this coming Sunday.

“Just getting him back to working and stuff, he was just wanting to do something,” Asmussen said. “He’s just been very full of himself, and he appreciates the rhythm and the work. I like how his state of mind is when you’re working him.

“We’ll put Florent on him for probably three of the works down here, just not yet. Two or three times Florent will work him, just for the feedback and, if nothing else, good dinner conversation. Gun Runner knows the difference, when I’m wanting him to do more. Angel gallops him all the time, and he’s always picked up when it isn’t Angel on him. He’ll just do more.”
