Gun Runner, the likely favorite for the $16 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) –the world’s richest horse race Saturday, Jan. 27– arrived at Gulfstream Park Thursday at approximately 6:47 p.m.
Expected to be named Horse of the Year Thursday, Jan. 25 during the Eclipse Awards at Gulfstream, Gun Runner was led off the van by Scott Blasi, assistant to Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen, and walked into Barn 16. Gun Runner’s arrival was delayed several hours due to weather conditions earlier in the day in New Orleans.
Gun Runner, who last raced Nov. 4 when winning the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) at Del Mar, will be making his last start in the Pegasus before being retired to stud. The 5-year-old has won 11 of 18 career starts and $8.9 million. His will be seeking his fifth consecutive victory in the Pegasus.
His opposition in the Pegasus will include Sharp Azteca, West Coast, Collected, War Story, Toast of New York and Stellar Wind.
