Gulfstream Park Oaks Winner Salty Makes 2018 Debut A Winning One

Gary Barber and Baccari Racing Stable’s Salty made a triumphant 2018 debut and return to Gulfstream Park in Thursday’s 10th race.

The Mark Casse-trained 4-year-old filly rated off along the backstretch run of the mile optional claiming allowance race for older fillies and mares before making a strong stretch run to win going away as the 1-2 favorite.

“She keeps getting stronger and stronger the further she goes,” jockey Tyler Gaffalione said. “She’s a really nice filly and she’s really come back strong this year.”

Salty, who ran a mile in 1:37.05 to win her third straight race at Gulfstream, broke her maiden and came right back to win the Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2) during last year’s Championship Meet before going to be Grade 1 stakes-placed in the Acorn, Coaching Club American Oaks and Alabama Stakes.

Salty gave Gaffalione his third winner of the day, following Arch Legacy ($10) in the second race and Twice Around ($14) in the eighth. Gaffalione ranks second in the jockey standings behind runaway leader Luis Saez.

“I have to thank my agent and all the trainers and owners. My agent (Matt Muzikar) works real hard and does a great job and he makes my job a lot easier,” the Davie, FL native said. “Every day I get to come out here and learn from these guys and when you win a race it means something here. We just take it day by day and keep improving if we can.”
