Great Lady M. Purse Returned To $200,000; Race Retains Grade 2 Status

There has been an adjustment to the stakes schedule for the upcoming Summer Thoroughbred Festival at Los Alamitos. The eight-day meet will begin Thursday, July 6 and continue through Sunday, July 16.

Bob Moreno, Los Alamitos' racing secretary, said Sunday the purse for the Great Lady M. Stakes will remain at $200,000 and the race will retain its Grade II status. The original stakes schedule released in March for the Summer Thoroughbred Festival had the Great Lady M. with a purse of $150,000 and as a Grade III.

Named in honor of the multiple stakes winning mare who was the dam of 1992 Racing Hall of Fame inductee Lady's Secret, the Great Lady M. is for fillies and mares (3-year-olds & up) at 6 ½ furlongs and will be run Saturday, July 8.

Great Lady M., who won 14 of 58 starts and earned $332,008, was owned by Bob Spreen and trained by Hall of Famer D. Wayne Lukas.

Offered during the Spring meet in 2016, the Great Lady M. was won last year by Finest City, who went on to capture the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint last Nov. 5 at Santa Anita. That Grade I victory enabled Finest City, who is owned by Seltzer Thoroughbreds and trained by Ian Kruljac, to earn the Eclipse Award as the female sprint champion.

The other stakes on the Summer Thoroughbred Festival are the $100,000 Bertrando for California breds (3-year-olds & up) and the Grade III, $200,000 Los Alamitos Derby for 3-year-olds.

Won a year ago by Boozer during the Spring meet, the one-mile Bertrando will be run Saturday, July 8 while the Los Alamitos Derby, which goes at 1 1/8 miles, will be offered Saturday, July 15. Accelerate captured the 2016 Derby last Sept. 24 for Hronis Racing LLC and trainer John Sadler.
