Grade 1 Winner Maxfield To Target Derby Points In Matt Winn

Godolphin’s Grade 1-winning homebred Maxfield may have finally found a spot for his 3-year-old debut, reports bloodhorse.com. The son of Street Sense will target the G3 Matt Winn Stakes at Churchill Downs on May 23, which now offers the winner 10 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby on Sept. 5.

The Matt Winn “seems like the most likely spot,” trainer Brendan Walsh told The Blood-Horse. “The timing is good and (our) home court.”

Maxfield won the Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland last fall, and traveled to Santa Anita ahead of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Walsh wound up scratching the colt before the race and Maxfield later underwent surgery to remove a chip in his right front ankle.

This year, Maxfield began breezing in South Florida and has been at Keeneland since early April. His most recent work came on Saturday, May 2, a bullet six furlongs in 1:13.20.

Churchill Downs plans to add more races to the Road to the Kentucky Derby as schedules at other tracks pan out. Maxfield already has 10 points from his Grade 1 win as a 2-year-old, but even winning the Matt Winn would only place him 22nd on the current Derby leaderboard, outside the main body of the field, so he’ll need more than this one start between now and the Sept. 5 Kentucky Derby.
