Golden Gate Fields, Santa Anita Taking Entries For Resumption Of Racing

Officials at Santa Anita are planning to take entries on Tuesday with the intention of resuming racing at the Arcadia, Calif., racetrack on Friday, May 15, under strict protocols and with no spectators to prevent the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19).

Santa Anita has not raced since March 22. Minutes before its March 29 live racing program was to begin, officials with the Los Angeles County Department of Health ordered the track to close, despite Santa Anita having operated spectator-free and without incident for two weeks. Safety protocols were submitted by The Stronach Group, owner of Santa Anita, to LA County officials on April 18.

Santa Anita is scheduled to race through June 21.

Meanwhile, Golden Gate Fields took entries on Sunday for a nine-race program on Thursday, May 14. The Bay Area track, also owned by The Stronach Group, last raced on March 29. Like Santa Anita, track officials received word from the Alameda County Health Department to shut down shortly before its April 2 program was scheduled to begin.

A total of 80 horses was entered in the nine-race program at Golden Gate, with a scheduled first post time of 12:45 p.m. PT.

Racing at Los Alamitos in the Orange County city of Cypress has been allowed to continue without interruption.

Thoroughbred tracks that have continued to race without interruption are Gulfstream Park and Tampa Bay Downs in Florida, Fonner Park in Nebraska and Will Rogers Downs in Oklahoma. Oaklawn in Arkansas recently completed its season on May 2.

Charles Town in West Virginia resumes racing on Thursday, March 14, and Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., will open its spring meeting on Saturday, May 16.

Racing at all North American tracks has been conducted without spectators and under strict protocols since the coronavirus was determined to be a pandemic by the World Health Organization in mid-March.
