What can horse racing do to become a more popular sport and successful business?

One week before the Kentucky Derby, Sports Business Journal staff writer Liz Mullen posed that question to a variety of notable people in racing and broadcasting and came up with a wide array of answers.

For Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert it’s more fan giveaways and big events. Owner Mike Repole wants to see racing organized under a commissioner’s office. Broadcast  executives Kip Levin of TVG and Rob Hyland of NBC Sports Network believe racing must embrace technology, with all racetracks broadcasting in high definition and innovations like jockey cams on each horse putting viewers in the race. Claiborne Farm’s Walker Hancock says the fan experience is key.

While many gave different answers,” Mullen writes, “four main themes emerged: better storytelling, customer service, going global and tech innovation.”
