‘Getting Better All The Time’: Cox Eyes Breeders’ Cup For Owendale

While he doesn’t have an automatic berth into this year’s Breeders’ Cup, Oklahoma Derby winner Owendale may still compete in the World Championships, his trainer Brad Cox tells the Daily Racing Form.

Cox said assuming Owendale comes out of Saturday’s Derby in good form, he could be pointed to either the Breeders’ Cup Classic or the Dirt Mile.

“He seems to be getting better all the time,” Cox said. “He really has matured since last year. We thought he had talent. It’s taken him a while to put everything together. I think he’s kind of grown up mentally and physically over the last six months and become a real racehorse.”

Owendale has a trio of Grade 3 wins this year — the Lexington and the Ohio Derby in addition to the Oklahoma Derby — and he also finished third in the Preakness.
