Gary West: Maximum Security To Undergo Thorough Medical Examination, New Round Of Drug Tests

The following statement was provided by Thoroughbred owner and breeder Gary West, who bred and co-owns Maximum Security, Eclipse Award champion 3-year-old male of 2019 whose victory in the world’s richest race, the $20-million Saudi Cup, was followed nine days later by a federal indictment alleging illegal doping by trainer Jason Servis and others.

After Maximum Security’s victory in the Saudi Cup I was stunned to learn that my former trainer, Jason Servis, had been indicted. He now stands accused of “doping several horses,” one of which is my horse, Maximum Security. This is a very serious charge. It threatens the integrity of Thoroughbred racing, an industry and sport that I have been a part of and have cared deeply about for decades.

Therefore, I am announcing that I have retained Dr. Larry Bramlage to immediately perform the most advanced and comprehensive scientific and medical testing of Maximum Security known to man. I have placed no restrictions or limitations of any kind on how, why, or what in his judgment is necessary to exhaustively examine Maximum Security from hoof to tail. He is to leave no stone unturned. Dr. Bramlage also has complete discretion to coordinate his examination with any other experts of his choosing.

Maximum Security is scheduled to have an ultrasound and ECG of his heart, a complete nuclear scintigraphy (bone scan) of his spine, head to tail, and all four limbs from the ground up this week. He will have digital radiographs of all of his joints and an ultrasound of his chest and lungs. He will also have a complete soundness exam, complete blood counts, serum enzyme and electrolyte profiles, and a complete physical exam. Additionally, Dr. Bramlage is authorized to have any other testing done that he thinks is warranted or useful.

Hair, urine and blood samples from Maximum Security were collected prior to his shipping to Saudi Arabia and again immediately after the race. My understanding is the samples were sent to a testing laboratory in Paris, France, which has some of the most stringent testing facilities on earth. I am specifically requesting the well-regarded forensic racing regulatory lab in Paris who already has multiple samples from Maximum Security in their possession test for SFG-1000, the substance in question. They have already tested his samples twice in the past, but now that the substance in question is well-known (SGF-1000), I am asking them to use any additional test available to assess Maximum Security’s samples.

Dr. Bramlage is an internationally known and respected independent equine veterinarian. He is a partner in the renowned Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Ky., and past president of the American Association of Equine Practitioners. He has been awarded the Jockey Club Gold Medal for contributions to Thoroughbred racing in the United States.

I have asked Dr. Bramlage to prepare a full and complete written report of his findings and to do so as quickly as he can, consistent with the need to be as thorough as he deems necessary. I have specifically authorized Dr. Bramlage to release his written report to the general public as well as to any government authority that may request a copy of his report.

Furthermore, I have instructed Dr. Bramlage to advise and coordinate with my racing manager to immediately commence and complete the collection of urine, hair and blood samples from all of my horses previously trained by Jason Servis, even though Maximum Security is the only horse named in the complaint. This is our best contemporary option to assess the status of our horses previously in training with Jason Servis.

I have requested that Dr. Bramlage send the results of those samples to such lab or labs for testing as he determines in his sole discretion, provided this is acceptable to each racing jurisdiction where the horses are now stabled. SGF-1000 is the substance in question and I want to conclusively determine if there is any evidence of SGF-1000 in any of my horses’ systems. Those test results will also be made available to the public as well as to any government authority that may request a copy of his report.

Finally, I am making a formal request of the proper authorities to have all of Maximum Security’s previous tests in all graded stakes races be retested to determine if there was SGF-1000 in any of those tests.
