Garter And Tie Breaks His Maiden In Florida Sire Stakes’ Affirmed Division

Jacks or Better Farm’s Fred Brei was given even more incentive to win the $200,000 Affirmed Division of the FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes at Gulfstream Park Saturday after former trainer Stanley Gold saddled Arindel’s Cookie Dough for a triumph in the $200,000 Susan’s Girl Division of the series for 2-year-olds sired by nominated stallions standing in Florida.

Brei and Gold had both won a record 18 Florida Sire Stakes triumphs before parting ways a few years ago. Two races after Gold extended his FSS record to 19 winners, Brei celebrated No. 19 as an owner in the Gulfstream winner’s circle following Garter and Tie’s half-length triumph in the Affirmed.

“Stanley had one up on me after the filly race. I said to Stanley coming in, ‘I’ve got to win the darn thing. You’re one up on me,” Brei quipped.

Garter and Tie ($9.20) finished a troubled third in the $100,000 Dr. Fager, the six-furlong first leg of the FSS series in which he surged late to miss just a half-length short of victory.

“I was surprised he ran as well as he did at six-furlongs. I can tell you that race in the past that I’ve won several times didn’t go in 1:09-and change. He got hit twice in that last race,” Brei said. “We’ve always felt he’d be best at two turns, so we’ll see.”

Like Cookie Dough, Garter and Tie broke his maiden Saturday while earning stakes credentials. The homebred son of Brooks ‘N Down rated a few lengths off the pace under Emisael Jaramillo along the backstretch as Well Defined showed the way while setting fractions of 23.21 (seconds) and 46.26 for the first half mile, stalked by Dr. Fager victor Cajun Firecracker into the far turn. Well Defined opened up on Cajun Firecracker leaving the turn into the homestretch as Garter and Tie loomed boldly while sweeping wide into the stretch. Well Defined held gamely under jockey Carlos Montalvo but was unable to hold off Garter and Tie.

Garter and Tie ran seven furlongs in 1:23.05 while winning for the first time in four starts. Well Defined held second, 3 ½ lengths ahead of Cajun Firecracker.

Trainer Ralph Nicks said Garter and Tie will be suited to the 1 1/16-mile distance of the $400,000 In Reality, the final leg of the Florida Sire Stakes Sept. 29.

“When I saw him in March, he was my pick. I told Fred down the road this will be the best horse, and he’s starting to come around with the distance,” Nicks said. “He’s not a real fast horse but he’s real steady, he’s good, he’s getting a better mind as he matures and as we go along he’s getting better.”
