Friday Spill Causes Alvarado To Miss At Least One Week In The Saddle

An incident at Belmont Park on Friday afternoon will cause jockey Junior Alvarado to miss at least one week of races, reports drf.com. Alvarado was riding Sword Fighter in the 6th race, a six-furlong allowance on the turf, when he was hit with a clod of dirt nearing the quarter pole. Alvarado fell from his mount, and was then hit by a trailing horse.

Since he was momentarily unconscious, Alvarado will have to be cleared by a neurologist before returning to the races due to an informal policy put in place by the New York Racing Association stewards.

Sword Fighter was uninjured in the incident. Alvarado did suffer a hairline fracture in one of his lower lumbar vertebrae, but agent Mike Sellitto said doctors told Alvarado that “if I didn’t tell you it was there, you wouldn’t know it was there.”
