Free Drop Billy, Firenze Fire Top ‘Wide Open’ Gotham

Nine horses will go to the Aqueduct gate Saturday looking for points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby. The field will be topped by Dale Romans trainee Free Drop Billy, who scratched from the G2 Fountain of Youth last week and is also entered in the G3 Tampa Bay Derby.

The Gotham will assign points 50-20-10-5 across the first four finishers.

“I think it’s a wide-open race,” Romans told the NYRA press office. “For most of the 3-year-old preps at this time of the year, they’re all wide open, everybody is starting to come together, but he’s doing great, so we’ll see how it goes.”

The one-mile Gotham will be a distance cut for the Albaugh Family Stables-owned colt, who comes in off a second in the G2 Holy Bull at 1 1/16 miles. He has drawn post position six.

“The distance doesn’t matter for him,” Romans said. “Even though it’s a different distance, and a different racetrack, it doesn’t matter. He’s a versatile horse. He’s a push button horse. He won a Grade 1 at 7/8 miles, and he won a Grade 1 at 1 1/16 miles, so the distance for him isn’t really a concern at all.”

Jockey Dylan Davis will have the call on the son of Union Rags.

Facing off with Free Drop Billy is Firenze Fire, who comes from a second-place run in the G3 Withers after winning the Jerome earlier this year. Mr. Amore Stable is the owner/breeder on the son of Poseidon’s Warrior.

“We’ll see how it goes. I guess he doesn’t get a lot of respect, but his form is good. I don’t know if it’s because he’s not a high-priced yearling, but if you look, at one point he was four-for-six. He won the Sanford up at Saratoga, he won the Champagne, then the Jerome,” Servis said. “He’ll always give you a run, he always tries.”

Enticed, winner of the G2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes in November, will look for an improvement off his fourth-place finish in the G2 Holy Bull for Kiaran McLaughlin and Godolphin Racing.
