Fonner Park’s Bosselman/Gus Fonner Stakes Closes With 47 Nominations

Nominations have closed for the 2020 renewal of the Bosselman / Gus Fonner Stakes at Fonner Park.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and no-spectator racing at Fonner Park, the purse has been reduced from $75,000 to $50,000 and will be run on Wednesday, April 29.

“The race will lack the on-track and citywide fanfare it typically receives due to the COVID crisis,” said Fonner Park CEO Chris Kotulak. “But even with the reduced purse, the race has received significant interest given that owners with a nice horse have hardly any place to race their horse with so many racetrack closures.”

The headliners of the 47 nominations include: Backsideofthemoon, trained by Robert Kelsaris and owned by Charles Hallas. The 8-year-old gelding recently finished third in the $125,000 Stymie Stakes at Aqueduct in New York on March 7. He has earned $598,316 lifetime, with a race record of: 42-6-8-7.

Trainer Marissa Black has nominated both of her runners that finished first and second in the Dowd Mile Stakes, the local prep for the Bosselman / Gus Fonner Stakes. Blue Harbor won the Dowd Mile to push his lifetime record to: 56-12-13-6; $300,897. Mr. Tickle rallied late for second in the Dowd Mile and now has a lifetime numbers of: 41-12-9-4; $241,118.

Fight On has a pair of third-place finishes at Meydan Racecourse in the United Arab Emirates, including a third in the Group 3 Mahab Al Shimaal. He is trained by Doug O’Neill (trainer of Kentucky Derby winners I’ll Have Another and Nyquist) and owned by CTR Stables and Westside Racing Stables. The 5-year-old’s record is: 25-4-3-4; $395,771.

Gato Guapo is trained by Robertino Diodoro and owned by Charles Garvey. The 5-year-old Florida-bred has stakes wins in Arizona and Canada and has earned $196,549; with a record of 27-7-5-6.

Sleepy Eyes Todd nearly stole the 2019 G3, Oklahoma Derby with a second-place finish at 40-1. Owned by Thumbs Up Racing and trained by Miguel Silva, he is lightly raced with a record of: 9-4-1-0; $208,865.
