Fonner Park Trial Period ‘Exceeded Our Expectations;’ Racing Will Continue Through April

Nebraska’s Fonner Park raced Monday through Wednesday over the past two weeks in a “trial period” experiment, the results of which would determine whether the track continues to host racing through its scheduled end of the meet on May 2.

According to the Grand Island Independent, Fonner’s trial period was a success and CEO Chris Kotulak has announced plans to continue hosting racing through the month of April.

“It exceeded our expectations because we did not expect as many other tracks to cancel racing,” Kotulak told the Grand Island Independent. “So the limelight that we believed we were moving into just got a lot brighter than we expected.”

Fonner is one of just two tracks in North America hosting racing early in the week, due to the worldwide shutdowns brought on by the coronavirus pandemic. The track has brought in record handle numbers during its trial period, and even added an early Pick 5 to its wagering schedule.

Going forward, the post time will be 4:00 p.m. local time, 5:00 p.m. Eastern, to separate Fonner from Will Rogers Downs.
