Florida Horse Found Butchered; Not Singular Case

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office reports that a horse was found dead and dismembered in Summerfield, a Florida community.

Cindy Downs, the property owner, was concerned when one horse did not come up to eat breakfast; all of the horses in her care were alive and well the night before. She found Frosty, a 9-year-old Quarter Horse, dead, butchered and dismembered in the field.

Frosty’s owner, Mari Pritchard, said the horse was only at the farm temporarily until his new home was finished. Mari noted that Frosty was exceptionally friendly, so she may have been easy to catch. Downs believes the horse may have been slaughtered for human consumption, which is illegal in the United States.

Reports of horses being stolen and slaughtered have been reported in Collier, Manatee, Marion and Sumter counties recently. Horse owners are encouraged to be diligent in the care of their horses and awareness of their property. It is not known if the cases are related, but the investigation is ongoing.
