First 2-Year-Old Race Of 2020: Eight Fillies Will Run Without Lasix Thursday At Gulfstream

A pair of Arindel homebreds and a filly from Wesley Ward, widely recognized as one of the country’s leading trainers of 2-year-olds, are among a field of eight fillies that help comprise the first juvenile race of 2020 Thursday, April 16 at Gulfstream Park.

Juan Alvarado-trained stablemates Pretzel and Quinoa Tifah will break side-by-side from Post 7 and 8, respectively, in the $65,000 maiden special weight sprint going 4 ½ furlongs on the main track carded as Race 2. First-race post time is 1 p.m.

Among the race conditions, no Lasix will be permitted in any horse within 24 hours of post time (1:34 p.m.). All horses will carry 118 pounds.

Pretzel, by Brethren out of the Yes It’s True mare Calorie, is a half-sister to the mare Sweet Khalesi that won four of 16 career starts including the 2017 Sugarloaf Key Stakes, placed second in two other stakes and banked $189,490 in purse earnings.

Ward is represented by Mrs. Fritriani Hay’s Lime, a daughter of Iqbaal that Ward also bred. Lime, who breezed four furlongs from the gate in 50.40 seconds April 4 at Gulfstream Park West, will leave from Post 2 with spring-summer meet-leading rider Tyler Gaffalione aboard.

Trainer Ralph Nicks will send out Awesome View for Jacks or Better Farm Inc., also known for their precocious 2-year-olds and holder of a record 19 victories in the Florida Sire Stakes. Edgar Zayas rides from Post 1.
