First 2-Year-Old By Kentucky Derby Winner Nyquist Races At Gulfstream On Friday

Wesley Ward-trained Breakthrough, a son of 2016 Florida Derby (G1) and Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Nyquist, has been installed as the 6-5 morning-line favorite in a $65,000 maiden special weight race for 2-year-olds on Friday’s program at Gulfstream Park.

Breakthrough, who was purchased for $330,000 at the 2019 Fasig Tipton Kentucky July sale, is scheduled to be the first offspring of Nyquist to race. Irad Ortiz Jr. is slated to ride the Kentucky-bred colt in the 4 ½-furlong dash carded as Race 2.

Owned by Ramon Tallaj and Constance Wickes, Breakthrough is a half-brother to Red Vine, a multiple Grade 1 stakes-placed multiple stakes winner who earned more than $775,000.

Nyquist kept an undefeated record intact when he prevailed in the Kentucky Derby by 1 ¼ lengths after winning the Florida Derby at Gulfstream by 3 ¼ lengths. The Doug O’Neill-trained son of Uncle Mo was named 2015 2-year-old Eclipse Award champion after winning the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) at Keeneland.

Ward will also send out Ken and Sarah Ramsey’s Chasing Artie, a homebred son of We Miss Artie.

On Thursday’s program, owner/trainer Daniel Pita’s Princess Secret ($14) debuted with sharp front-running victory in a 4 ½-furlong dash for 2-year-old fillies.

The Florida-bred daughter of Khozan was quickest out of the starting gate for the $65.000 maiden special weight race carded as Race 2, withstood pressure from Briella into the stretch before drawing clear by four lengths under Luis Saez.

Princess Secret, who was purchased for $30,000 at the 2019 OBS October sale, ran 4 ½ furlongs in 51.94 seconds after setting fractions of 21.99 and 45.62. Briella finished second under Miguel Vasquez, 4 ½ lengths ahead of Race Day Speed and Rajiv Maragh.

Princess Secret, who is eligible for the 2020 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes series that kicks off Aug. 1, was the first of four winners for Saez on Thursday’s card. Saez also scored aboard Bad Beat Brian ($5) in Race 5, Augusta Moon ($10.40) in Race 9, and Koko Star ($7.80) in Race 11.
