Final Breeze Proves Arrogate Up To Baffert’s ‘Standards’ For San Diego

Juddmonte Farm's superstar Arrogate, earlier this week confirmed once again as the Longines World's Best Racehorse of 2017, was put through his paces Saturday morning at Santa Anita in a final workout before next weekend's G2 San Diego Handicap at Del Mar. The 4-year-old son of Unbridled's Song, ridden by Martin Garcia, breezed in company with fellow San Diego entrant Cat Burglar to cover six furlongs in 1:11, according to, with fractions of 24, :35 3/5, :47 2/5, and :59 1/5, and a gallop-out to seven furlongs in 1:23 1/5.

“We don't want to break like we did in Dubai,” said trainer Bob Baffert, referring to Arrogate's very slow start before dominating the Dubai World Cup in March. “He's doing really well, but we still have to ship him down there and go through it. Next week he's gotta do well, but today he's up to my standards. I feel good about running him.”

Winner of his last seven starts, including the Travers, Breeders' Cup Classic, Pegasus World Cup and Dubai World Cup, Arrogate is currently the North American record-holder in terms of career earnings, with a total of $17,084,600. Baffert is targeting the San Diego Handicap as a prep race to have the colt ready for the TVG Pacific Classic on Aug. 19 at Del Mar.
