Filling In Ankle Sidelines Charlatan; Will Miss Kentucky Derby

Charlatan, undefeated winner of the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby but subsequently the subject of a potential medication violation, has been sidelined because of a minor ankle issue and will miss the G1 Kentucky Derby on Sept. 5, trainer Bob Baffert said on Saturday afternoon.

“He’s got a filling in a front ankle,” Baffert said. “They (veterinarians) found something there and we’ll probably have it taken out (surgically).” Baffert said the area in question is minor, describing it as “not even a flake, but we’ve got to stop on him. He’ll be out 45 days.”

Baffert said the setback means Charlatan will miss the Kentucky Derby but added that the Oct. 3 Preakness is a possibility.

Charlatan finished first in all three starts, beginning with a Santa Anita maiden race on Feb. 26. He came back to romp in a March 14 allowance race at the Arcadia, Calif., track, then shipped to Oaklawn to take the first of two divisions of the Arkansas Derby on May 2.

However, subsequent reports of a positive drug test for the Class 2 medication lidocaine emerged and Baffert is awaiting results of a confirmatory split sample test that could lead to Charlatan’s disqualification from that win, which included 100 qualifying points for the Kentucky Derby.

Charlatan last worked at Santa Anita on June 1, going five furlongs in 1:00.80. It was his second breeze since the Arkansas Derby. Baffert was pointing the colt for the G1 Woody Stephens Stakes on the Belmont Stakes card at Belmont Park on June 20.

The blow comes on the heels of Baffert-trained Nadal – unbeaten winner of the second division of the Arkansas Derby – being retired due to a condylar fracture and the tragic death of Baffert-trained 2016 champion Arrogate after completing his third year at stud at Juddmonte Farms in Lexington, Ky.

Charlatan, bred in Kentucky by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings, was a $700,000 purchase at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale. He races for the partnership  of SF Racing, Starlight Racing, Madaket Stable, Stonestreet Stables, Fred Hertrich III, John Fielding and Golconda Stable.
