‘Extra Special’: Cherie DeVaux Saddles First Winner Friday At Gulfstream

Cherie DeVaux saddled the first winner of her training career at Gulfstream Park Friday, visiting the winner’s circle with Traveling ($25.80) after Race 6, a mile turf race for $50,000 maiden claimers.

Traveling, a 3-year-old son of Tale of the Cat who had run three prior races, was DeVaux’s 29th starter.

“I’m very excited. It is a relief. A lot of the horses have been slow to come along. He was one of the first ones who came in, so it feels extra special,” said DeVaux, who served at Chad Brown’s assistant trainer before going out on her own last May.

Traveling set a fast pressured early pace under Brian Hernandez Jr. while posting fractions of 22.50 and 46.33 seconds for the first half mile before resisting stretch-long pressure to prevail by a neck in 1:36.38.

“I’m really proud. He had to really dig in the last couple of strides,” the 37-year-old native of Saratoga Springs, N. Y. “It’s taken him a little while mentally to put it all together. A little drop in class seemed to help,”
