Exercise Rider Killed In Training Accident At Churchill Downs

Cuban native Odanis Acuna, an exercise rider for trainer Ken McPeek for the past 10 years, was killed Saturday morning at Churchill Downs. According to drf.com, the 42-year-old was breezing a horse before dawn when that horse broke down in both front legs.

Acuna suffered head and neck injuries which were ultimately fatal, McPeek said. The horse, an unraced 2-year-old named New York Harbor, had to be euthanized as a result of his injuries. Training at Churchill was canceled following the first harrow break.

“Obviously everyone is extremely upset about this,” McPeek said. “Odanis was a fantastic person and one of the hardest-working people you’ll ever meet. It’s a real tragedy.”

We are all sick and saddened by the loss of such a good man in Odanis Acuna. We are working on all details to help his wife and children. There will be a Go Fund page soon. https://t.co/ArgTWujreW
