Enable ‘Full Of Herself,’ Routed To Darley Yorkshire Oaks Instead Of Juddmonte International

Enable will run in the Darley Yorkshire Oaks at York rather than the Juddmonte International.

John Gosden intimated after her second win in the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes at Ascot that she could miss the York meeting altogether, but she is set to appear on the Knavesmire later this month.

Enable had the ten-furlong International, sponsored by her owner, Prince Khalid Abdullah, as an option, but connections have decided to keep her at a mile and a half.

“She has been very full of herself since the King George and actually quite playful,” Gosden told racingpost.com. “It wouldn’t be in our interests to try to keep a lid on her for 71 days, while nor has she had a stiff spring and early summer campaign. She enjoys training and racing, so it is wise to put a nicely spaced race in the middle.”

Both races form part of the QIPCO British Champions Series. Enable won the Yorkshire Oaks in 2017 and will be attempting to become only the third dual winner of the race. The Yorkshire Oaks also offers an expenses-paid berth to the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf.

Given her whole season is based around winning an unprecedented third Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, the thinking is she will be better off staying at 12 furlongs in a race she won in 2017.

Enable had started her season over a mile and a quarter in the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown, before her victory over Crystal Ocean in what was an epic running of the King George.

Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager to the owner, said: “We know she is effective over a miler and quarter, but John didn’t want to bring her back (in trip) again, so we thought the Yorkshire Oaks would be a more suitable race bearing in mind her main objective.”

“Let’s play to her strengths and give her a nice run in the Yorkshire Oaks, after which we have around six weeks of build-up to the Arc,” Gosden echoed. “No decision on what happens after the Arc has or will be made for some time but I think you would have to say the likeliest scenario is that the Arc will be her last race.”
