Ellis To Be Suspended 60 Days, Fined $10,000 For Masochistic’s Breeders’ Cup Positive

Trainer Ron Ellis has officially been sanctioned for the drug positive of Masochistic in last year's Breeders' Cup Sprint, reports bloodhorse.com. On Dec. 17, the California Horse Racing board fined him $10,000 and issued a 60-day suspension, scheduled from Jan. 1 to Mar. 1.

Masochistic was found to have 30 picograms per milliliter of the anabolic steroid stanozolol and 161 picograms of its metabolite 16-hydroxy stanozolol in his system following a second-place finish in the Sprint; he was subsequently disqualified. A test eight days prior to the Sprint also showed the presence of stanozolol and its metabolite.

Stewards Grant Baker, Scott Chaney, and Kim Sawyer conducted a hearing into the case beginning on May 22, and issued their recommendation to the CHRB on Dec. 14 during a closed session. Ultimately the CHRB elected to follow that recommendation because Ellis “knew the risk” and “decided to run his horse despite that risk.”
