Eddie Haskell Defeats Stormy Liberal After Eclipse Champ Stumbles

Eddie Haskell didn’t leave it to Beaver Cleaver or anyone else on Friday at Santa Anita, as he ran down two-time Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint winner Stormy Liberal to take the day’s $67,000 allowance feature by a head while setting a new course record for five furlongs on turf. Ridden by Joel Rosario and trained by Mark Glatt, Eddie Haskell, a 6-year-old California-bred gelding by Square Eddie, got the distance in 55.06, shading five one hundreds of a second off the old record, set by Brandothebartender on Oct. 20, 2018.

“Rosario’s the key with this horse,” said Glatt, who claimed “Eddie” for $50,000 seven starts back on April 26, 2018. “He gets this horse to relax and he obviously loves this distance.”

A stalking third, just to the outside of early leader Calculator and Stormy Liberal turning for home, Eddie Haskell hit his best stride late and got his sixth win from nine tries at five furlongs on turf.

Off at 4-1 in a field of five older horses, Eddie Haskell paid $10.40, $2.60 and $2.40.

Owned by Phillip J. Wood and Jim Hailey, Eddie Haskell picked up $52,260 ($12,060 of which was from the California-bred incentive fund) for the win, increasing his earnings to $373,107 while improving his overall mark to 18-7-1-5. Bred in California by Reddam Racing, LLC, Eddie Haskell is out of the Boston Harbor mare Teresa Ann.

For his part, Stormy Liberal, trained by Peter Miller and ridden by Drayden Van Dyke, appeared to have a tangible excuse as he stumbled turning for home, causing him to lose his action for a moment. Undeterred, he kept to his task in game fashion, however, Van Dyke lost his stick while between horses in the shadow of the wire, which appeared to have little impact on the result.

Off as the prohibitive 1-5 favorite as he prepped for the Group I Al Quoz Sprint in Dubai late next month, Stormy Liberal finished 1 ¾ lengths in front of stablemate Calculator and paid $2.10 and $2.10.

“We’ll have to see how he is,” said Miller. “Hopefully, we can go on with him.”

Ridden by apprentice Heriberto Figueroa, Calculator, the biggest price in the field at 22-1, paid $4.00 to show.

Fractions on race, set by Calculator, were 20.88 and 43.51.
