Donna Veloce Cruises In Santa Ysabel

Making her first start in three months, 1-5 favorite Donna Veloce cruised to an easy 4 1/4-length victory in Sunday’s Grade 3 Santa Ysabel Stakes at Santa Anita Park. The 3-year-old daughter of Uncle Mo stumbled a bit at the break, then settled off the pace before going three wide on the far turn and taking over. Ridden by Flavien Prat for trainer Simon Callaghan, Donna Veloce ran 1 1/16 miles over the fast main track in 1:45.43.

The filly, second in both the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies and G1 Starlet as a 2-year-old, is campaigned by Kaleem Shah and the Coolmore partners. The Santa Ysabel victory earned her 50 points toward a start in the Kentucky Oaks.

Breaking from the rail in a field of six sophomore fillies, Donna Veloce had two horses beat while about 3 ½ lengths off a three-horse spread consisting of Gidgetta, Speech and Tiz Fake News mid-way around the Club House turn.

Leaving the half mile pole, Prat asked his mount and in an instant, she split horses three from the fence and was about a neck off a very well-meant Speech with a quarter mile to run.

“She was ready, but she stumbled there at the break and that got us in behind those horses, so she was a little bit keen,” said Prat, who has now ridden “Donna” in all four of her starts. “When we turned down the backside, she dropped the bit and relaxed very well. It’s always great when they are able to adjust and I hope she can improve off of this race. She was full of run at the end and she handled everything well.”

A close second in both the Grade I Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies on Nov. 1 and in the Grade I Starlet at Los Alamitos Dec. 7, Donna Veloce, who is owned by Kaleem Shah, Inc., Mrs. John Magnier, Michael B. Tabor and Derrick Smith, paid $2.60, $2.10 and $2.10.

An $800,000 Fasig Tipton March 2-Year-Old in Training Sale grad, Donna Veloce, who is out of the Irish-bred mare Coin Broker, now has two wins from four starts and win the winner’s share of $60,000, she has earnings of $490,000.

“I though it was a perfect race,” said Callaghan. “We didn’t plan to take back like that. I thought she would be the fastest filly, Flavien went to Plan B, letting them go when she didn’t break good. She got a good schooling, got around them and I think that is gonna serve her to good effect in the future.”

When asked if the intention was to run next in the Grade II Santa Anita Oaks on April 4, Callaghan responded, “(Kaleem and I) will talk about it over the next few days and with the other owners. But I’m pretty sure we will stay here.”

Ridden by Geovanni Franco, Speech, in her first try around two turns and versus stakes competition, ran a big second, finishing 3 ¼ lengths clear of Storie Blue. Off at 7-1, Speech paid $4.40 and $2.60.

Last early with Drayden Van Dyke up, Storie Blue was easily third, paying $2.80 while finishing 3 ¼ lengths in front of Paige Anne.

Fractions on the race were 22.79, 46.80, 1:12.11 and 1:38.47.
