‘Did They Forget The Boy?’: Baffert Says Justify Slam-Dunk Horse Of The Year

While many observers believe this year’s Horse of the Year will be a close vote, trainer Bob Baffert tells Horse Racing Nation it’s an “easy” decision to go with Triple Crown winner Justify.

“Everybody, they’re talking that other horse. I go, ‘What?’” Baffert said. “Did they forget the boy? It’s easy. It’s like, ‘Eh, Triple Crown. It’s not a big deal.’ We’re only as good as our last win.”

Of course, “that other horse” is Accelerate. The Horse of the Year debate ramped up after Accelerate captured the Breeders’ Cup Classic, giving him a sixth victory in seven 2018 starts, five of those wins Grade 1. The 5-year-old colt’s only loss came by a neck to Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner City of Light in the G2 Oaklawn Handicap.

Justify won all six of his starts, beginning in February and culminating with the Belmont Stakes in June. He was retired in July.

“I can’t believe they’ve already forgotten about him. That hurts my feelings,” Baffert told Horse Racing Nation. “They need to go back on YouTube and watch those races.”
