Denali Holds Virtual Birthday Party For Pensioned Mare Serena’s Song

Hall of Fame mare Serena’s Song celebrated her 28th birthday with a virtual party hosted by Denali Stud last week. A handful of Denali staff presented the mare with a horse-friendly birthday cake and told viewers how much she has meant to the establishment of the farm and sales company.

“Obviously, we’ve been very fortunate to be blessed with a lot of great owners and a lot of great horses but Serena was the first big one,” said Denali president Craig Bandoroff. “If somebody said, ‘What are you most proud of?’ her career as a broodmare would be right up there.”

Serena’s Song ran in 38 races, winning 18 and finishing out of the money in only six. Seventeen of those victories were graded, including many against males, earning her the 1995 Eclipse Award for Champion 3-Year-Old Filly. D. Wayne Lukas trained the daughter of Rahy for Bob and Beverly Lewis. Upon her retirement to Denali, Serena’s Song was the all-time leading money earner for distaffers.

As a broodmare, she has produced six stakes-winning offspring, including Group 1 winner Sophisticat and Grade 2 winners Harlington and Grand Reward. She was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2002 and pensioned in 2014, and has been living the retired life ever since.

She is fondly known as the “Queen of Denali Stud.”
