Del Mar: ‘Uncertainty’ About Timetable To Rebuild San Luis Rey Downs

While the horses and stable staff affected by the fire at San Luis Rey Downs are beginning to settle in to a regular routine, there is still some underlying concern about how long they will stay at Del Mar.

“The biggest uncertainty is where we’re going to be,” Phil D’Amato assistant Linda Thrash told the San Diego Union Tribune. “We’ve heard everything from being here until the 15th of January to the first of May.”

The Daily Racing Form reports that The Stronach Group has solicited bids for the reconstruction of San Luis Rey, but that no official timetable has been set out. Santa Anita chairman Keith Brackpool said that San Luis Rey would need to be home to approximately 500 racehorses in order to make financial sense for TSG, and that discussions about potential barn structures were ongoing.

In the meantime, stable staff’s needs have all been provided for at Del Mar. No further donations are needed for those horsemen, but the trainers burned in the fire, Martine Bellocq and Joe Herrick, are still accepting donations toward their medical expenses (more here).

“You know how they show a fire in the movies or a show like ‘Chicago Fire?’” asked trainer Cliff Sise. “That’s pretty accurate. You don’t know where you’re at. You’re lost. It’s chaos. But I can’t believe how everyone came together. It was absolutely incredible.”
