Day One: Illinois Horseplayer Leads Del Mar Handicapping Challenge

Frank Mustari of Des Plaines, Ill., turned his starting bankroll of $6,000 into $27,332 in day one of the Del Mar Handicapping Challenge. Players started the day with a $6,000 live money bankroll in the two-day Challenge. Mustari’s big score was a $40 trifecta in Race 7 paying $16,000.

Faron McCubbins from Mt. Washington, Ky., with $22,275 and Matt Baiungo from Henderson, Nev., with $22,168 round out the top three. More than $250,000 in prizes is at stake. First Place takes home $75,000 including a full $10,000 entry in the 2018 Breeders’ Cup Betting Challenge. The top eight finishers after Sunday’s races receive BCBC entries and entries in the $2.5 million National Horseplayers Championship. The winner will be eligible for a $1 million bonus if he or she goes on to win the 2018 Breeders’ Cup Betting Challenge at Churchill Downs.
