Curlin Colt Lights Up Board For Record $1.5 Million At Strong Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Sale

The second and final session of the 2017 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic sale of 2-year-olds in training concluded Tuesday with increases for both session and the overall auction, as well as a record high price of $1.5 million.

Gross receipts of $25,237,000 for 330 horses were up 9.1 percent from last year, while the average overall price of $76,476 was up 11.4 percent. The $35,000 median rose 9.4 percent. The sale's second session was also up over last year's second session; total sales of $13,699,500 were up 10.3 percent, and the average of $81,545 was up 18.2 percent. Second session median rose 4.7 percent.

The RNA rate was down for the auction overall, to 20 percent from 26 percent at last year's auction.

A chestnut colt by Curlin, Hip 388, set a new record at the Midlantic sale when he brought $1.5 million during the Tuesday session. Consigned by Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds, which also consigned Monday's session topper, the colt was purchased by Breeze Easy and John C. Oxley. The 2-year-old colt is out of Franscat, a winning daughter of Stormin Fever. Franscat is the dam of two stakes winners, and is from the family of G1 winner Ogygian.

Just a short time earlier, Hip 373 brought $710,000 to temporarily lead the sale. By Orb out of Extra Sharp by Cherokee Run, the bay colt's second dam is seven-time Grade 1 winner, Sharp Cat. The colt was consigned by Crupi's New Castle Farm, agent, and purchased by Dennis O'Neill, agent.
